5 Bold Trends from 2020 Design and Construction Week

The LiveAbode team is back from the biggest home, kitchen, and bath design trade show of the year and ready to share some of the top trends we spotted for 2020!

Approximately 90,000 people attended the 2020 International Builders Show and the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show, which together make up Design and Construction Week. The annual event is the largest in our industry, drawing more than 2,000 exhibitors to the Las Vegas Convention Center with presentations, new product launches and demos held throughout the week.

We look forward to this event every year to give us a preview of the year’s top trends and new products. Read on to learn more about the trends we spotted among the industry’s leading brands.

Transition Your Style

In everything from exterior design, to cabinets to bathroom faucets, transitional style is trending for 2020 as we see the Modern Farmhouse style begin to wane in popularity. Blending modern and traditional elements, the transitional style was exemplified in the use of mixed materials on home exteriors, minimalist interior designs and Nordic-style doors and windows.

Bring on the Bold

From Kohler’s black sink with oversized painted florals, to Smeg’s Dolce & Gabbana collection, to decorative marble tiles from Bedrosians Tile & Stone, eye-catching patterns and color brought style to the forefront in Vegas.

Wood You Be Mine

From Cedar Renditions aluminum siding with a woodgrain finish, to solid wood doors, the look of wood continues to maintain popularity with homeowners. Houzz also predicts that wood is going to come back as a cabinetry color favorite in the next few years.

Dark, Matte Colors

Matte black finishes add drama and depth to both interior and exterior designs, as do bold dark gray, blue and green surfaces and appliances. Check out some of our favorites from Hansgrohe and True Residential.

Elissa Grayer, of @elissagrayerinteriordesign, selected the Joleena Widespread Faucet in a rich matte black finish for the first-floor powder bath in the acclaimed @aspiredesignandhome @JLHPShowHouse. The faucet’s dark hue formed a strong point of reference against the room’s textured walls and provided contrast to the rosy pink patterned fabric that adorned the window shade. The Elissa Grayer Design team notes, “The new Joleena Collection was so easy to work with. The style is very transitional with clean lines and rich finishes. We chose the matte black, which created a stunning contrast to the white porcelain vanity, working beautifully in our modern design, while still honoring the craftsman-style architecture of the home.” . . . . . Everyone Needs an Island

According to Houzz Pro, 39% of homeowners are making their islands stand out against white cabinets. Gray is the #1 color option followed by blue, then black, then wood tones. In 2020, one in two kitchen islands will feature an appliance (microwave, dishwasher, beverage fridge, etc.). Nearly half of homeowners will completely upgrade their island this year, as well.
